Retort packaging is a functional composite flexible packaging solution designed to withstand high-temperature, high-pressure sterilization at 121°C–135°C, enabling long-term shelf stability at ambient conditions without preservatives. It serves as a lightweight alternative to traditional metal cans and glass jars and is widely used across the food, pharmaceutical, and pet food industries.
These pouches feature a high-temperature-resistant, multi-layer retort structure. The inner layer is a CPP (cast polypropylene) retort-grade heat-sealable film, while the middle layers include a nylon puncture-resistant reinforcement and an EVOH or aluminum foil high-barrier layer. This composition ensures structural stability during sterilization, preventing delamination, bag rupture, or the release of harmful substances. It effectively resolves the common issues of leakage, off-flavors, and short shelf life encountered with ordinary packaging after sterilization. Compliant retort pouches can provide a shelf life of 6–24 months at room temperature, eliminating the need for cold-chain storage and transport and significantly reducing distribution costs for brands.

1.What temperature and pressure can your retort pouch withstand during sterilization?

Our retort bags can normally resist sterilization up to 121°C, matching standard autoclave conditions. We can also adjust film structures for 135°C high-temperature short-time sterilization upon request. The pouch will not delaminate or burst under proper retort parameters. Please ensure sufficient back pressure is applied during the cooling phase to prevent pouch bursting.
2.Are retort pouches suitable for both wet food and high oil content products?

Yes. The multi-layer laminated structure provides excellent barrier performance against moisture and grease. It is ideal for packaging stews, curry, meat sauces, and oily ready-to-eat meals. For products with extremely high oil or acid content, we can customize the laminate structure to effectively prevent layer separation.

Custom gravure printing is fully supported. We adopt retort-resistant ink that withstands high heat and steam sterilization. Printed patterns and colors will not blur, fade or peel off during retort processing. Please note that a slight color shift may occur after high-temperature sterilization, which is within the industry acceptable range.
5. Can retort pouches be used in the microwave after sterilization?

Standard aluminum foil retort pouches are not microwave-safe. For microwave heating needs, we provide foil-free transparent retort structures. This non-aluminum version retains high oxygen and moisture barrier properties and supports direct microwave heating. Note: The pouch must be slightly opened or punctured before microwaving to release internal steam and avoid expansion.
